What age can my child start water polo at New Wave?

Flippa Ball begins in Year 2 with skill training and fun games. This leads into junior divisions U12, U14, U16, U18 and onto seniors. Children can start at any age from Year 2.

Does my child need to be a strong swimmer?

Players need to be able to tread water. A reasonable level of swimming is a prerequisite — specific water polo swim techniques are taught at the club.

Where does New Wave train?

New Wave will have a dedicated water polo pool at Wesley College as its home pool very soon. In the meantime, we train at St Hilda's and Leisurefit Booragoon.

When is the water polo season?

Summer season — Term 4 and Term 1. Registrations open August/September. AYC usually occurs in the April school holidays. Winter training runs in the off season.

What is WAJL and WASL?

WAJL is the WA Junior League and WASL is the WA Senior League — competitions run by Water Polo WA. New Wave is required to register all players with WPWA.

Yes. Women's and Men's senior teams in WASL. All welcome.

New Wave player benchmarking will be provided pre-season and continued for junior members registering, across ALL age groups:

Benchmarking gives every player an opportunity to understand their current level, and provides a starting point from which we can track their development throughout their 2026/27 season membership.

Players will be assessed against our New Wave Athlete Development Pathway, with feedback provided along the way to help them understand their progress and what they can work towards next.

Players wishing to be considered for a Junior A Grade team this season must attend the relevant age-group trial session.

A Grade trials will incorporate benchmarking as well as assessment against our key selection criteria and in-game scenarios.

A Grade selections will only be made through the club's selection process.

Please register whether you're attending benchmarking only or A Grade trials, so we can plan sessions appropriately. If you're genuinely unable to attend either scheduled session, please contact registrar@newwavewpc.com.au as early as possible to discuss alternative arrangements.

New Wave is proud to host National Water Polo Day! Open to new and existing players and parents. Come down and watch some water polo, learn some new skills, and play in a Fast 5 comp. Bring some cash for a sausage sizzle and help support the club. A quick online registration helps us plan numbers on the day.
